After looting Crale’s Arcane Wonders, the group considered ways to get back to Sigil. Gareth wanted to see if there were any other possible gateways back to the City of Doors, so he paid a visit to his contact, Johnny Hammer, the grizzled halfling proprietor of the Harlequin’s Flask. This seedy joint, clearly a front for some of Hammer’s other business opportunities, was in the center of Tradegate, just by the central gate that gave the town its name.
On the way, the group spotted their cloaked friends with the shimmering rods. They inserted them into the ground around the gate, and the rods turned invisible.
Hammer’s ale was watery and his information useless, although he had seen Arthani in the past. The group kept an eye on the men outside, when suddenly the cloaked figure of Crale—actually the doppelganger Arthani—approached. Eddie confronted him, at which point he shifted into a different guise: an elven male with dark hair and a strange rictus grin.
The fight was over quickly, with an injured guard, three dead henchman, and Arthani subdued. The group gave the guard a healing potion, told him that it was all on PTC business, nabbed two of the three rods, and beat feet out of the city and back to Sigil.
Estavan met them at the PTC headquarters, where the group gave him all of Crale’s goods, aside from the ring and the magic items, as well as the trade coins.
